VW T6 Camper Van Lifestyle: Life on the Road with Franky the Campervan

The VW T6 camper van lifestyle represents something many people are searching for today — freedom, flexibility, and the ability to leave everyday routines behind whenever the road calls.

Across the UK, Volkswagen camper vans have become a gateway to spontaneous adventures, weekend escapes, and long road trips. For many owners, the van becomes far more than just a vehicle. It becomes part of the family.

To explore what that lifestyle really looks like, we spoke to Michael and Julie from Portsmouth, who have owned their 2016 VW T6 camper van, affectionately known as Franky the Campervan, for the past six years.

What started as a simple idea quickly became a lifestyle centred around travel, campfires, and discovering new places together.

For many owners, the VW T6 camper van lifestyle offers the perfect balance between everyday usability and the freedom to explore the UK whenever the road calls. Vans like Franky show how the VW T6 camper van lifestyle has become one of the most popular ways for people to experience road trips, campsites, and weekend adventures.

Meet Franky the Campervan

Franky is a 2016 Volkswagen T6, fully converted into a capable camper designed for both weekend trips and longer tours.

Franky started life as a standard Volkswagen Transporter before being professionally converted into a camper by Vanscape, a UK camper conversion company known for transforming Transporter vans into practical touring campers.

Over the years, Michael and Julie have gradually upgraded the van to make it comfortable, practical, and capable of travelling off-grid.

Their setup now includes:

These upgrades allow the van to be used almost anywhere, whether that’s a campsite for the weekend or a longer touring adventure.

But when asked what they love most about the van, the answer was simple.

“The freedom it gives us — from a day out to a full tour.”

Favourite Trip: The North Coast 500

When asked about their favourite adventure so far, Michael and Julie both point to one unforgettable journey — Scotland’s North Coast 500.

The NC500 is widely considered one of the most spectacular driving routes in the UK, covering over 500 miles of coastal roads, mountain passes, and remote villages.

For camper van owners, it’s an ideal road trip. With everything you need inside the van, you can take your time, stop wherever the scenery demands it, and experience the landscape at a much slower pace.

Trips like this perfectly capture the spirit of the VW T6 camper van lifestyle — where the journey itself becomes the adventure.

A Royal Parking Spot

One moment that still stands out for Michael and Julie is a rather unusual parking location.

Franky once found itself VIP parked at Balmoral Castle, the Scottish residence of the Royal Family.

It’s not every day a camper van finds itself parked somewhere like that.

But these unexpected moments are often what make travelling in a VW camper so memorable.

Camper Life: Cooking on the Road

Like many camper van owners, Michael and Julie keep their cooking simple and relaxed.

Meals are usually prepared outside the van, something they both prefer.

“Definitely no frying inside.”

Their favourite camper meals include:

  • Homemade chicken curry
  • Grilled steak

Evenings often revolve around sitting outside the van, enjoying good food and the quiet surroundings after a long day on the road.

When asked to choose between a sunrise drive or a campfire evening, the answer was clear.

Campfire evenings win every time.

Camper Gear That Makes Life Easier

Over time, Michael and Julie have discovered the gear that genuinely improves camper van life.

Some of their essential items include:

Julie also highlighted a few smaller items that make a big difference.

Packing cubes from Amazon help keep clothing organised inside the van, while a thermos pump flask filled with hot water is incredibly useful for cleaning and washing up.

They also stress the importance of having a place for everything, especially once the rock’n’roll bed is folded out for the night.

Where They Found Their Camper Gear

Like most camper van owners, Michael and Julie built up their equipment gradually over time.

Several of their key camping items were purchased from Viscount Caravans, including their Vango chairs, awning, and Safari Chef cooker, all of which help create a comfortable campsite setup.

Their Duvalay bedding was picked up at the Camping and Caravan Show, something many camper owners recommend for improving comfort when sleeping in a van.

Some practical items came from Amazon, including packing cubes used to organise clothing inside the camper.

For staying connected on the road, they rely on an EE Nighthawk WiFi router, which helps provide internet access while travelling.

One of the more memorable additions to the van came during a trip to Bavaria in southern Germany.

While visiting Julie’s brother Paul, who lives in a village called Pähl, not far from Lake Ammersee and the famous Andechs area, they picked up a table and storage larder for the camper.

It’s a small detail, but items like that often become part of the story behind a van — reminders of places visited and the people connected to those journeys.

Lessons Learned

Like many people new to camper van life, Michael and Julie admit they made one common mistake when they first started.

“We bought too much stuff trying to cover all bases.”

Over time they realised that camper travel works best when you keep things simple.

Many of the items they thought they needed early on turned out to be unnecessary.

It’s a lesson most camper van owners eventually learn.

The Volkswagen Camper Community

Stories like Michael and Julie’s are what keep the Volkswagen camper van community thriving across the UK. Across campsites, road trips and weekend meet-ups, the Volkswagen camper van lifestyle continues to bring people together who share a passion for travel, simple adventures, and the open road.

Every van has its own setup.
Every road trip tells a different story.

But the reason people fall in love with camper vans tends to stay the same.

Freedom.

For many enthusiasts, that lifestyle goes beyond the van itself. It becomes part of everyday culture — the road trips, the garage projects, and the clothing people wear to represent the community.

Designs like the Volkstoff Speed Shop T-Shirt reflect the same independent spirit that has always surrounded Volkswagen culture.
